We look for the best place to grow each I AM Organic product to guarantee the best quality all year round and optimally reduce environmental impact. Preferably as close to home as possible, of course. Because top-quality blueberries aren’t available all year round in the Netherlands, I come from Spain. From Lepe, a town in the province of Huelva, in Andalusia in south-western Spain near the Atlantic coast.
I AM ORGANIC LIVES WITH THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES CALENDAR. WE ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE BEST PLACES TO GROW OUR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, SO WE CAN DELIVER 365 DAYS PER YEAR. WE AIM FOR THE SHORTEST ROUTE AND THE GREENEST OPTION. ALWAYS.
With more than 330 sunny days a year, Andalusia’s Mediterranean climate is warm and sunny. Especially in the afternoon the “Foreño”, a mild and humid sea breeze, offers some cool air. What’s more, the sandy soil is somewhat saline and has a medium to high acidity level. This fertile, well-drained soil is also rich in oxygen, enabling the roots to grow well. There’s a lot of rain in spring and autumn and in summer it’s nice and dry. Blueberries like me thrive on this. Depending on the weather, Carmelo can harvest blueberries for up to six months, roughly from the beginning of January until the end of July, in ever-changing varieties such as Emerald, Snowchaser, Windsor, Star and Vera.
Blueberries are both delicious and healthy. Just like other fruit, they form part of a healthy diet and contain:

Storage tips
I have a natural protective layer that keeps me fresh. That’s why I keep well. Preferably in the fridge, where I remain fresh for about one to three days.
I don’t like moisture. If necessary, you can cover me in the fridge with some kitchen paper to absorb moisture. This will enable you to enjoy me for longer.
By looking carefully, smelling and tasting, you will know if I’m still fresh. If I am soft or mouldy, I’ve been lying around a little too long and should not be eaten.
Blueberries can also be frozen, preferably in a sealable container. I keep for about 8 to 12 months in the freezer. But then again, we’re so tasty there’s probably not much chance there will be anything left to freeze. Right?!
Usage tips
1) You can eat blueberries on their own or use them in dishes such as yoghurt, a smoothie or a muffin.
2) I don’t like moisture. That’s why it’s best to rinse me briefly before you eat me.
